The governments of China and Myanmar have grown closer since the military coup in Myanmar in 2021. The two foreign ministers of each country have agreed to 1) establish a China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, 2) boost a range of cross-border cooperation including cross-border industrial zones, 3) increase Chinese support for development in Myanmar 4) allow the Myanmar regime to open a consulate in Chongqing, and 5) that China will provide a 650 million RMB grant to Myanmar, among other measures. The Myanmar junta has also agreed to open a Liquid Natural Gas plant financed by China, and is likely to approve multiple other new Chinese projects within the Economic Corridor. The Myanmar government has recently ramped up its war against rebel groups, and has been documented to have repeatedly committed atrocities against civilians.
